Olives were first cultivated in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean sea and with the expansion of the Greek Colonies, the olive culture reached Southern Italy and then spread into Southern France. Olive trees were planted into the entire Mediterranean basin under Roman Rule. The Olive tree is the symbol of abundance, glory and peace. The oil of its fruit has been called "liquid gold".
